Show Overview

'The Phantom of the Opera' first opened in 1986 and remains to date, one of the most popular musicals of all time.

Set in Paris in the 19th Century, 'The Phantom of the Opera' is based on Gaston Leroux's 1911 Gothic Novel. It is about the mysterious Phantom, a figure who lives in the underground passages of the Paris Opera House.

He falls for a member of the chorus, Christine Daae and through the wall of her dressing room, becomes the 'Angel of Music'. He gives her vocal coaching and she is transformed into an amazing singer, no longer just part of the chorus; but the Phantom is fixated with Christine and when he sees her with childhood friend, Raoul, he becomes insanely jealous.

Desperate to win her, the Phantom, wearing a mask to hide his disfigurement, reveals himself to Christine and takes her to his dark underground world. He keeps her with him and only releases her days later after she promises to return of her own free will. By this time she has removed his mask and has seen his deformity.

Raoul also becomes jealous after hearing Christine speaking to the disembodied voice in her dressing room. She catches him spying on her and is angry but eventually tells him about the Phantom; they decide to run away, to leave Paris and the Phantom behind. But the Phantom overhears their plans and on Christine's last night in Gounod's Faust, he kidnaps her and threatens to blow up the Opera House and kill everyone unless she agrees to marry him. At first she refuses but when she realises Raoul had followed her and has become trapped in the Phantom's torture chamber, she agrees.

The Phantom's love for Christine eventually leads him to release her to pursue her happiness with Raoul but broken hearted and alone, the Phantom dies.

'The Phantom of the Opera' is a magnificent production on a huge scale and from the early days with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the lead roles, it continues to churn out wonderful performances with the original breathtaking score by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
