Show Overview
Les Miserables is an epic musical that audiences have been enjoying in the West End for over 25 years; a feat that makes it London's longest running musical.
It is based upon Victor Hugo's novel about one man's fight to survive despite the relentless persecution of another. Jean Valjean has spent 19 years on the chain gang and went he gets his ticket of leave, he is condemned to live life on the outside; a criminal with no prospects. He changes his name therefore and becomes a successful business man and mayor but the policeman Javert is never far away, a shadow that seems to threaten whenever Valjean is happy.
The tragedy of this musical is set against the background of the French Revolution and so the story of Valjean runs alongside the story of the young Revolutionaries who sought to do away with the monarchy and bring about the end of religious and feudal privileges that had hitherto governed the country.
It is a powerful story with amazing sets and stirring music; the French revolution is laid before you on the stage.
And throughout, the innocent love between the young Marius and Cosette who is Valjean's adopted daughter falters as the barricades are built. There is the anguish of Eponine who also loves Marius and who delivers one of the most loved songs, 'On My Own' and who later dies. And there is the complete break down of Javert as he can no longer face himself in the face of Valjean's mercy and loyalty.
'Les Miserables' has so much to offer with its' powerful storyline, the human suffering and sacrifices, unrequited love and tragedy, not to mention the enduring score that is at times so stirring, that tears are likely, so go prepared!
Highly recommended.
